Heys goalkeeper Coach talks about his role, career and injuries

Firstly, tell is about your school, youth days. who did you play for and any notable achievements or memories.
Football for me started at a young age in my hometown Blackburn. Playing and training for my local team, I then moved over to Salford and joined Barr Hill JFC where we won many trophies, in fact I have a cellar full of them.
I also attended Moorside High School, being the captain of the school team and leading us to a few school trophies.
I then signed for AFC Monton as a youth player as well as playing for their Reserves at age 16. I then signed for Salford City youth team where unfortunately we were unsuccessful.
As well as playing youth matches I got my shot playing in the Salford City first team where I played in various league and cup matches. I then went on to play and train at New Mills. After a year there I went back to Monton but then left.

You were at New Mills before Heys? Tell us about your involvement there.
My involvement at New Mills was just training, until I got my first appearance, which didn’t end to good as I conceded 5 and our very own Danny White rifled one into the Top Bin.
After making a few appearances for New Mills, I then got dropped as I was too young and needed experience.

Did you pick up your first knee injury there?
No, I did my cruciate playing for my Sunday League team in a Final on Littleton Road Astro Turf.

How did you come to join Heys?
I came to Heys after being out for almost 2 years. My good friend, Jamie Baguley asked if I could come down and get back my fitness and train with the Goalkeepers.

You have suffered another serious injury is it the same problem and what is the position with it at present?
Yes, that right, I have unfortunately done my cruciate for a second time which I did back in April playing for Heys. I am waiting for an operation which should be sometime in the New Year. I hope ha.

You are now involved as a goalkeeper coach. what does that role entail both in terms of training and matches?
Yes, that’s right I have been given a new role at the club as Head goalkeeper coach. In my new role I deliver training sessions for all our keepers at the club and give them advice on certain things. I also warm the keepers up on a match day with my assistant Dan Wolstenholme

What do you think of the season so far and what can be achieved by Heys?
I think the season so far is going well. We have been on a cracking run and won the team of the month which is already an excellent achievement. Personally, I think we have a massive chance of doing something this season with the squad and management we have down at Heys.

Do you want to tell us about your role with elite sport and what that involves- it’s you with Jamie and Chris Baguley?
Yes, I work for Elite Sport & Education and we go into various schools and deliver PE lessons and clubs in all sports. We want to help develop the children in their chosen sports and seeing that development over a school year is great to see.
We also run various clubs out of schools for example, in the holidays we will run holiday camps for children in the local community. But it’s not all children we run a fitness Bootcamp which is for women, who come down and put in a lot of hard graft to see some cracking results.

Anything else you want to add?
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the board and everyone involved with the club i.e. volunteers in helping Heys out and helping us achieve new goals.
