Heys Under 21's lifted the NW Youth Development League Championship Division Trophy with a 3-1 win over Atherton LR at Adie Moran Park this afternoon.
The two sides have gone head to head at the top of Championship Division “A” all season before LR lifted the League title by a five point margin from runners up Heys.
However, the Heys youngsters showed they were not going to settle for another runners up spot, showing great resilience to come from behind and lift the Trophy.
The opening exchanges were all Heys. Dre Taylor headed against the post in the second minute and Reece Higgins and Bryson Appleton both went close. LR settled into the game with Heys keeper Austyn Hall having to intervene during a bout of pinball in the penalty area.
However, it was still largely against the run of play when Atherton took the lead in the 26th minute, scoring directly from a corner.
Ethan Cummings went close for Heys just before the break as they looked to restore parity. However, nine minutes into the second half they did level when Appleton struck with a header.
Heys continued to hold the upperhand and looked to make their control count with striker Harvey Riva entering the fray and the change paid dividends in the 73rd minute when he scored Heys second goal.
The visitors saw a player sin binned shortly after but it was not until the final minute that Heys could relax when Riva scored his second and the Trophy belonged to Heys.
