Heys head to Winsford United on Saturday looking to bounce back from the midweek loss to AVRO.
The defeat ended a three game unbeaten run which was part of a wider spell of one defeat in seven that had pushed Heys clear of the relegation zone. Conversely, after previously gaining three draws it could be deemed Heys have not won in four outings. Whatever, Matt Barnes side now sit 13th in the NW Counties Premier Division table with 37 points from 30 games. They are fifteen points clear of second bottom Runcorn Town, on whom they have a game in hand and although not mathematically safe from relegation it is going to take an extraordinary run of results for Heys to drop back to the First Division. As the season enters the final quarter the aim will be to finish in the highest position possible.
Heys performance against AVRO was a little flat and Manager Barnes will be looking for a stronger showing at Barton Stadium tomorrow. The home game with Winsford back in August provided Heys with their first Premier Division points, after they had lost their first four games. The 4-1 win set them on the path away from the foot of the table and the aim will be to maintain that steady progress in the final two months of the season.
Winsford, in many ways, have had a similar season to Heys. They have had good spells, punctuated by a run of indifferent results. They started the season well with ten points from their first five games, including a 4-4 draw with Macclesfield. Their defeat at Heys then set in motion a run of one win in ten games, eight of which were lost. They then bounced back with a run that brought fifteen points from seven games. Their last six games have brough seven points but include a 3-2 home win over Skelmersdale and an away win at Longridge and a narrow 2-1 loss at Macclesfield.
Winsford also tasted defeat on Tuesday night losing 2-1 at home to Vauxhall Motors. They are presently 15th in the table with 36 points and have two games in hand on Heys.
Both teams will be looking for a pick me up to consolidate their positions as the season heads into the home straight.
