Prestwich Heys begin the new NW Counties League Premier Division season on Saturday with a trip to Burscough (3pm).
It’s a tough start for Heys who after narrowly missing out on the play offs last season, will be looking to surpass last season’s feat of finishing seventh, with their highest ever points haul at step five of 83 points. Heys have retained the majority of last season’s squad whilst bringing in some new faces. Takura Sambizi, Luke Byron and Luke Mann are the notable departures whilst new arrivals include Toby Green from Stockport Town, Harry Cannon-Noren from Burscough, Abdul Djalo from Glossop and former Bolton player Mitchell Henry as well as Ellis Richardson, from Bolton Wyresdale, who made his mark with a hat-trick at Holywell Town last weekend.
Burscough themselves were in the hunt for a play-off place for much of the campaign before finishing tenth but took four points off Heys last season with a 2-0 early season win at Adie Moran Park before the points were shared in a 1-1 draw in the return fixture. The Greens are under new Management this season with former AFC Liverpool boss Phil Stafford at the helm and have recruited well, with several players having joined thier Manager, in moving across from Merseyside.
Heys have only ever won once in six NW Counties league visits to Burscough, which was in 2021 when goals from Jack Coop and Lee Grimshaw earned a 2-1 win. They have had a couple of draws, including last season's 1-1 result where Louis Holt was on the mark.
