Two first-half goals. in the space of three minutes, proved decisive as Prestwich Heys fell to defeat against Glossop North End at Adie Moran Park on Saturday.
This was Heys first game for a fortnight and they were able to welcome back David Badrock and Louis Holt after injury. Glossop, having climbed the table in recent weeks, had former Heys duo Gabriel Mooney-Muñoz and Harry Allen marking their first return to Adie Moran Park since leaving the club.
The opening exchanges were evenly matched, with both sides struggling to carve out anything clear-cut. Heys created the first real opening on sixteen minutes when Bryson Appleton threaded a pass through to Dre Taylor. His effort was pushed away at full stretch by Allen, and Takura Sambizi’s follow-up was deflected over. From the resulting corner, Holt headed narrowly off target.
Glossop hit back moments later as Mooney-Muñoz drove through the middle and unleashed a low strike from 25 yards, forcing Lee White into a smart save around the post.
Appleton thought he had put Heys ahead on 20 minutes after meeting a superb cross-field pass from Rob Worrall, but the offside flag denied what would have been a well-taken finish into the far corner.
Both teams then traded chances as half-time approached. Ethan Sutcliffe found space to fire a powerful angled shot at White on 28 minutes, before Joe Camozzi went close at the other end, his low drive pushed away by Allen, with no Heys shirt on hand to follow up.
Glossop finally made the breakthrough ten minutes before the break. A short corner routine allowed Abdul Djalo to whip a cross to the back post, where Sutcliffe nodded the visitors in front.
Three minutes later, the Hillmen doubled their advantage after Heys surrendered possession in midfield. Mooney-Muñoz picked up the loose ball and drove forward before sliding in Aeron Bardsley on the left, who finished calmly into the bottom corner. The quickfire double visibly knocked the wind out of Prestwich as the visitors took control going into half-time.
The second half was always likely to be about game management for Glossop, but Heys pushed to find a way back. Appleton went closest on 55 minutes, cutting inside from the left before firing a dipping effort from distance that flashed just wide of the far top corner.
Sambizi and Appleton combined well again in the 68th minute to set up Worrall, but his strike from outside the box drifted wide.
Glossop’s first real threat of the half came on 70th minute when Jacques Etia battled through and saw his effort deflected behind.
Heys continued to probe late on. With ten minutes remaining, Alfie Belcher saw a shot blocked by Jordan Schofield, and the rebound fell to Appleton who steered wide.
Belcher was again involved on ninety minutes, racing onto a loose ball in the box, but was denied bravely by Allen. Two minutes later Jacob Ramplin fired narrowly past the post as Heys pushed right to the end.
But it wasn’t to be Prestwich’s day. The two goals late in the first half proved the pivotal moment, and although Heys were far livelier after the break, Glossop’s defence held firm to close out the game.
Heys looked a little rusty after their enforced break but with fixtures coming thick and fast, they will need to dust themselves down quickly and go again.
