Heys open the new NW Counties League season on Saturday as they head to newly promoted Euxton Villa (3pm).
It’s a tricky looking open assignment for Ryan Hutchinson’s side with the hosts certain to be full of all the excitement, momentum and enthusiasm that the first game in a new Division brings.
After finishing fifth in Division One North, Euxton did it tough in the promotion play-offs but produced great performances, firstly winning at Nelson, who had come second, triumphing 10-9 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
In the play off final, they travelled to Droylsden and they silenced a home crowd of over 2,500 by winning 2-0 to book their spot in the top flight. It was an overdue reward for Euxton who had finished fifth and fourth in their two previous seasons in the First Division.
With a revamped ground, with 3G pitch, they are a club on the up and they will doubtless be looking to get off to a flier.
Heys themselves go into the game with some momentum. After their Great Escape in avoiding relegation from the Premier Division last season it’s fair to say there has been a mood of optimism around Adie Moran Park during the close season.
The bulk of last season’s squad has been retained and there have been some good signings with the likes of Josh Tinker, Joe Camozzi and Rob Worrall set to bring experience to a relatively young squad.
After last season’s experience Heys will be looking to get some early points on the board to settle them down.
Indeed, the outcome of the game may hinge on which side copes better with the opening day fervour.
