It’s “Derby Day on Saturday as Heys travel to the Vestacre Stadium to face their old rivals AVRO in the NW Counties Premier Division (3pm).
The hosts go into the game as League leaders and on a nine match unbeaten run in the League with their last seven games all having been won.
It’s form that has taken them clear at the top of the table and with the chasing pack all having dropped points in recent weeks AVRO, with 76 points from 35 games, are six clear of second placed Vauxhall Motors and ten points ahead of third placed Wythenshawe Town whom they defeated 3-1 at Ericstan Park in midweek.
With five of their remaining seven games at home they will be looking to press home their advantage in the weeks ahead and clinch promotion to the Northern Premier League.
Heys themselves have been in fine form of late, that was until last weeks heavy 5-1 defeat at AFC Liverpool where an injury hit side came unstuck to dent an impressive spell of six wins in the previous seven.
Managers Lee 0’Brien and James Hampson will be hoping to have more players available to them after a blank midweek and will want their side to finish the season strongly not least against the club they managed up until just over twelve months ago.
The match will be the 50th meeting between the clubs, whose first meeting came back in 1955 in the South East Lancashire League. Heys have enjoyed the better of the previous forty-nine games, winning twenty-five to AVRO’s fourteen with ten draws. Many of those meetings came in the Manchester League but since both teams stepped up to the Counties AVRO have the edge with three wins to two. Heys won the last meeting, 1-0 at Adie Moran Park earlier in the season with a late Joe Rothwell goal.
The teams have served up some memorable encounters down the years and in true derby fashion they haven’t always gone to form. Let’s hope the old rivals can serve up another!
