Kyle Haslam has been named the Paxsport NW Counties League Premier Division Goalkeeper of the Month for March.
This is the fourth time that Kyle has won this award after winning it three times for Wythenshawe, the last of those coming in February 2024.
The 29-year old started at Radcliffe before moving to Stockport Town in 2017. He then moved to Charnock Richard before joining Wythenshawe in the 2019/20 season. He remained at the Ammies for six seasons, winning the NWCFL Premier Division with them, before moving to Cheadle Town at the start of this season. He has made over 200 appearances in the NWCFL. He joined Heys, for whom he played one game in 2019, in October but had to wait until the end of January to make his first appearance this time around.
Kyle received his award before last week's home game against AFC Liverpool. Presenting the award was League Ambassador Sid Blain, a man with Heys connections himself having been an Assistant Manager to Peter Gilmour in the 1970's.
From everyone at the club, Congratulations Kyle on a richly deserved award.
Kyle's nomination is below.
Kyle enjoyed an outstanding March, recording six clean sheets in seven league fixtures, the only goal he conceded being something special. His performances provided the foundation for a strong run of seven successive wins for the team out of an overall sequence of nine successive victories.
His consistency, concentration, and command of the penalty area, key saves at important moments and his ball distribution with his feet have been influential in that success.
The month started with a 1-0 home win over Stockport Town. This slow burner of a match, in which the local Fox pitch invading the pitch, was for long spells the main talking point, came alive in the final twenty minutes with Heys holding the lead. As play swung from end to end, in the 82nd minute Stockport broke forward and a great shot on the volley from Harley Monaghan , from the edge of the area looked destined for the top corner but Kyle produced a superb save as he tipped the ball over the bar at full stretch and effectively ensured the three points.
Our 2-1 home win over Litherland Remyca saw Kyle concede his only goal of the month and it was a special goal that did beat him, a half volley on the turn from Dillon O’Callaghan in the 84th minute to level matters. Heys restored their lead in the 88th minute but the game was far from over and in the ninth minute of added time Kyle bravely dived in amongst the feet, in a goalmouth scramble, to secure the win.
The 2-0 home win over Longridge was a tight affair. Amongst the visitor’s early dominance Kyle dropped low to deny Liam Atkinson and then early in the second half kept out a Paul Turner shot and then produced a great save on the hour to thwart Lucas Wane. The save was made all the more significant when Kamoy McNair scored Heys second goal shortly after to secure the win.
In the 7-0 win over City of Liverpool Kyle was rarely tested but demonstrated his level of concentration, in dealing competently with crosses into the area and from the oppositions’ main threat at set pieces.
In the hard fought 2-0 home win over Irlam, Kyle was key to the win. In a first half which saw Irlam enjoy the better of things, in the 25th minute they got in behind the Heys defence and Ethan Cartwright looked to lift a shot over Kyle who twisted athletically in the air to get a touch on the ball and thus allow James Badrock to clear the danger. Irlam threatened again in the 33rd minute when a ball into the box was laid off by John Johnston to Ross Davidson whose sharp shot was palmed down and gathered at the second attempt by Haslam. The importance of the saves came to light when Heys took the lead on the stroke of half time. The second half was similarly tight and in the 73rd minute Callum Sandle fired in a shot for Irlam that resulted in a corner that Haslam had to claw from under the bar, starting a flurry of action as Heys battled to clear multiple balls into the box, with the Heys keeper making the final intervention. It paved the way for a late surge that saw a second goal secure another win.
The 2-0 won at South Liverpool saw Heys largely control matters, but Kyle showed his levels of concentration making important saves in each half from a close range shot and then a header late in the second period.
Concluding the month was a 1-0 home win over St. Helens. Chances were at a premium, but the nature of the match meant there was no rest and concentration levels had to be high. Kyle showed his bravery with a dash from his line to gather at the feet of a St. Helens forward, a clash that saw him need treatment. However, the big moment came three minutes from time when St. Helens substitute Chris Hill ran into the box then struck with a powerful effort, forcing Kyle to leap and get a strong hand to it to somehow keep it out. Certainly, a contender for save of the season.
Throughout the month Kyle has been incredibly consistent. His contribution has played a part in the team now having the best defensive record in the division, having conceded only seven goals in thirteen matches since Kyle came into the team.
