It is with great sadness that the club learned of the passing of Carl Fitton this week.
Carl, who played mainly as a left back, was at Heys over the course of four seasons from 2016 to 2020 and made 97 appearances for the club, scoring two goals.
He first joined us on our return to the NW Counties League in 2016-17 and made 37 appearances. He netted the first of his two goals, striking the winner in a 2-1 First Division Cup win over Litherland Remyca.
In 2017-18, injury limited Carl to just seventeen appearances but he was a member of the squad on the night Heys lifted their first ever semi-professional trophy in winning the 1st Division Cup beating Camell Laird 2-1 in the Final.
The following season he re-established himself as a first choice left back making 40 appearances.
Carl wasn’t a player who grabbed the headlines every week, but he was one of those important, almost essential players, all sides need, week in week out, consistent and ever dependable. He was also a hugely likeable, popular person with all at the club, amongst his managers and teammates and with the supporters. Always approachable, happy to chat, have a laugh and even in his time of lengthy injury he was there on the touchline getting behind his teammates.
Carl predominantly, played all his football under the Management of Jon Lyons who on hearing of his passing said on social media” I am gutted to hear the news of Carl’s passing. It was a pleasure to have him in my Heys team, a top lad and a wand of a left foot. You will be missed my mate” A sentiment shared by all.
We send our sincere condolences to Carl’s family and friends at this sad time.
Rest in peace, Carl.
