It is with sadness the club has learned of the passing of Billy Bell, aged 72.
Billy played for Heys initially in the mid 1970’s and had further spells towards the end of that decade and into the 1980’s.
He began his career as a trainee with Oldham Athletic before playing for Ashton United, Droylsden and Hyde United.
A ferocious but also highly talented, skilful defender he was also played for Rochdale before becoming part of the famous Mossley side of the 1970’s.
He joined Heys in 1976 and made an early impression with a goal in a 11-0 friendly win over Leyland Motors. He was to find the net again later in the season, scoring from the penalty spot in a 1-1 draw with New Mills at Grimshaws as Heys finished mid table in the Cheshire County League. But it was for his defensive abilities for which he was known. Not much got past Billy and when he won the ball, he could quickly turn defence into attack with his footballing skills.
Billy moved on to Buxton before a couple of further short spells at Heys. He was a well-known figure across the Non-League scene and we pass our thoughts and condolences to his family and friends at this sad time.
Billy’s funeral will be held at Blackley Cemetery on Monday 16th February at 2pm
