Heys joint Managers Lee O’Brien and James Hampson were pleased with their sides first pre-season outing as they came from behind to win 2-1 at Bolton United.
Although there were some familiar faces on show it was a largely new look Heys on show, resplendent in their new grey Hope +Glory away kit.
Utilising their full squad the Heys bosses fielded two separate starting line ups in each half to give as many players as much game time as possible.
Heys largely controlled matters in the first half, hitting the post and working the hosts keeper.
It was a pattern that continued in the second period but Bolton, who won the Manchester League Division Two Championship last season, proved obdurate opponents, whilst being lively in attack.
It was the home side who took the lead early in the second half with a 20 yard effort.
However, Heys persistence paid off in the final quarter as they scored the goals that ensured the win, the decisive strike coming in the last minute.
Afterwards, O’Brien said “ We were very controlled considering the amount of new players. In all honesty we should of won the game by a canter, but Bolton were nothing short of brilliant, a team of absolute warriors who put in the hard yards. Their Wingers were class, and there goalkeeper was top drawer. Man for man they were were on it. There are top people running the team/club. The Workout was as good as it gets and I have nothing but respect for Bolton United”.
Those sentiments were echoed by Hampson who said “ Thanks to Bolton United for the game today. They pushed us for the full 90, minutes in what was a very hard, competitive game! The Score line is irrelevant in pre season and there was much to take for both sides from the game”
Heys next fixture is at Blackpool Wren Rovers next Saturday (2pm). Before, then there will be more training sessions and July 1st sees the opening of Players Registration when we can begin to put names to those retained and new signings.!
