Greg Daniels delivered a striking masterclass, scoring four goals as Prestwich Heys defeated Litherland Remyca at Adie Moran Park on Saturday.

The Heys striker gave Heys a half time lead with a 33rd minute goal but the game swung in a dramatic six-minute spell just after half time. Firstly, Heys ‘keeper Russ Saunders pulled off a superb save to deny Remyca an equaliser before Daniels then took charge with two superb finishes to take the game away from the visitors and complete his hat-trick before adding his fourth goal in the 76th minute.

Although, Heys were worthy winners the opening half hour had done little to suggest that seven goals would follow in the remainder afternoon. The opening exchanges were fast and furious with both teams going toe to toe, tackle for tackle, with a refreshing honesty. No malice, no play acting just two sides battling for supremacy.

The first true sight of goal came in the 21st minute when Rio Clegg fired just over from 25 yards before Remyca, who had beaten Heys 3-2 just three weeks previously, went close six minutes later with a shot from Elliot Taylor that flashed across the face of goal.

Then came the moment for Daniels to make his entrance. In truth, it was probably one of the easiest goals he will ever score. A short corner from Clegg found Connor Berry and when he delivered the ball into the six-yard box it fell invitingly for Daniels to poke home from six yards out.

Three minutes later, as the game opened up, Daniels went close as he broke forward before firing an angled shot just wide of the post and shortly after Clegg linked with Saidkhon Khamidov before the latter curled a shot wide.

Litherland then created a great chance when former Radcliffe boss Bobby Grant found James Hammill whose shot on the half volley was fortunately straight at Saunders who gathered at the second attempt.

On the stroke of half time, good work by Clegg teed up Matt Davies but the Heys man fired over. Heys could be pleased to take a hard-earned lead into the break against a good, dangerous Remyca side who on the restart came out in lively fashion.

Three minutes in came Saunders’ save. Oli Nugent found space some 25 yard out and rifled a shot towards the top right corner of the goal. It looked destined for the back of the net but the Heys ’keeper leapt to somehow get a hand to the ball and tip it over. A stunning save and it was to prove a decisive moment.

In the 51st minute it was two-nil Heys as they worked the ball well before Clegg found Daniels who took a touch and then rifled an angled shot into the far corner, giving the keeper no chance.

The 54th minute brought Daniels his hat-trick. Great play between Davies, Daniels & Clegg moved Heys up the pitch before the latter released a peach of a pass with the outside of his foot for Daniels who fired, first time, low past the ‘keeper.

The visitors were stunned and for a time Heys threatened to run amok. Daniels clipped the bar with a shot and then cutting into the box he saw a shot smothered by keeper Ciaran O’Loughlin.

Clegg, who had been so influential, was replaced by Ryley Smith but it did not disrupt Heys rhythm as the latter created Heys and Daniels fourth goal in the 76th minute. Smith jinxed his way into the box before finding Daniels who superbly spun his marker, rolling the ball under his feet, before planting his shot into the bottom corner. Moments later he left the field to an ovation from fans and team mates alike.

Remyca had seen the game taken away from them, but their spirit remained and their endeavour brought some reward in the 79th minute as Foy found space in the area to fire home.

Two minutes later though Heys responded with their fifth as Berry, from a central position, fired low and although O’Loughlin got hands to it, he could only help the ball on its way in.

The scoring was not over however with the visitors claiming their second goal in added time as a great free kick from Hammill thudded against the post with Nathan Salisbury poking home the rebound.

It was some reward for their contributions to the opening fifty minutes of this game before the majesty of Daniels took centre stage.
