Season ends with last gasp loss

Writes Rick Barrett

Prestwich Heys went looking for their seventh win in their last eight games as their campaign drew to a close with a visit to 13th placed AFC Blackpool.

As the teams took to the pitch in very strong winds for this end of season seaside clash, the weather was a far cry from the previous weekends hot bank holiday sunshine which had brought two home wins in three days against Garstang and AFC Darwen.

It was Heys who came out of the blocks quickly with the first chance on five minutes as Lee Grimshaw darted down the right leaving the Blackpool defender trailing and whipped in a cross which Will Shawcross connected but fired over the bar.

It was Heys again pressing on nine minutes as a corner came over on the right and defender Jacob Holt got in a firm header but wide of the post.

Heys again went close on 19 minutes with the Blackpool goalkeeper Alex Cameron making two great saves, first tipping over from Brad Sixsmith and then Jacob Wood shortly after.

Heys were well on top but as the half went on the wind got stronger and both teams were finding it difficult to carve out decent chances.

So, it was goal less at half time and the visitors came out for the second half playing into the wind and it showed as Blackpool started brighter but only creating half chances.

It was a midfield battle by this point but in the 65th minute a cross from the left again found the energetic Sixsmith who's shot from twelve yards brought another great save from Man of the Match, Cameron.

As the second half progressed Heys were starting to get a lot of joy down the left with Josh Youngs getting the better of the Blackpool defence. At the back Mark Ayres was delivering a commanding display whilst with the experience of Danny White showing in the middle, Heys looked the more likely winners.

Their best chance came on seventy-five minutes when John Youngs was clean through but from only eight yards managed to fire straight at the Cameron.

The Heys fans were starting to think their side may rue the missed chances, as has happened a few times during the course of the season and so it would prove.

With just three minutes remaining, it was ironic that newly named 'fans player of the season', Jacob Holt gave the ball away 30 yards out and the Blackpool winger raced down the left crossing the ball in to Ben Duffield to tap in from close range past Heys keeper Russell Saunders to provide to the game’s decisive moment.

So, it was a disappointing end to what had been a good end of season run and a game that summed up the frustration of Heys season. They have delivered some great creative play, but their finishing has often let them down. Whilst there is a need for a proven goal scorer to be found by the Heys management team in the summer they enter the break also with a sense of real optimism at the talent already in the squad. August can’t come quick enough.

TEAM: Russell Saunders, Darius Photiou, Josh Youngs, Jacob Holt, Mark Ayres, Jake Wood (Capt), Danny White, Brad Sixsmith, Lee Grimshaw, Max White, Will Shawcross Subs; Kieran Sherlock (for Max White 73 mins), Conor Smith (for Photiou 80 mins), James Woolfenden (for Grimshaw 60 mins), Paul Socha
