Heys eased to an ultimately comfortable win over Walshaw Sports at Stainton Park last night.
In an often untidy game Jon Lyons men were good value for their win which took their points tally for the season to 72, the highest by any club in recent times for a 30 game season.
On a bright sunny evening, with Heys Champions and Walshaw assured of Premier Division safety there was more than an end of season feel to the opening exchanges.
Both teams pressed and probed but with defences on top chances were few and far between. Dalton McLaughlin fired over for Heys whilst it took a timely headed clearance by George Powell to keep out Mario Daniel.
Heys were forced into a change in the 34th minute when Danny White was replaced by Paul Tierney and the latter made an instant impact, scoring within two minutes of his introduction.
It was a delightful pass from deep by Jake Wood that opened up the Walshaw defence and Tierney went through to glide the ball past Jon Maylon.
The goal sparked the game to life and it took a good save by Maylon to keep out a Greg Wills effort after he had been released by Max White.
Play then switched to the other end and Paul Snape had a good chance but lifted his shot over.
A superb move by Heys on the stroke of half time, unlocked the Walshaw defence and it took a fine scrambling save by Maylon to deny Tierney a second.
It capped an impressive cameo for the Heys striker who picked up a knock and was himself replaced at the interval by Lewis Bond.
Bond almost followed suit in making an immediate impact but pulled his shot just wide after good approach play by Adam Hilton.
Hilton then saw a shot pushed round the post by Maylon as Heys looked to put the game to bed.
Walshaw themselves were looking sharper particularly when Dom Slaven joined the attack to keep the Heys defence on their toes.
Indeed, there was much more of an edge to the second period and after a couple of fierce challenges the game erupted in the 65th minute. Daniel clashed with John Blackley and as the players exchanged words the Walshaw player punched the Heys defender.
Fortunately, what could have been a real tinderbox moment was quickly diffused by the players of both sides with the referee having no option but to dismiss Daniel.
Walshaw almost made light of being a man down when Slaven found space but he fired into the side netting.
It was to prove a costly miss as Heys increased their lead in the 70th minute. Max White threaded through a pass to release McLaughlin who went through to slot home.
Rob Sadler pulled off a fine save shortly after, tipping a header onto the bar and over, but Heys were now comfortable and sewed up their win in the 90th minute when Mark Baguley (pictured) curled in a delightful free kick, beating the keeper at his near post.
Heys conclude their League programme at Atherton Town on Saturday, 2pm.
