4-0 win marks Trophy celebrations

Heys celebrated winning the Premier Division title with a 4-0 home win over AVRO on Saturday.

Having secured the title with a 3-0 midweek win over Wythenshawe Amateurs, Heys showed no signs of taking their foot of the gas to record their 22nd win, from 28 games and open up a 12-point lead at the top of the table.

AVRO had their moments in the game but Heys were clinical despite being without, amongst others, their four leading scorers in Jamie Baguley, Lee Bruce, Paul Tierney and Erike Sousa.

Heys success though this season has been based on the strength of their squad and as has been the case so often those stepping in took their chance.

Heys started briskly playing some good football to stretch the visitors defence. AVRO keeper Ash Hall had to be alert in the 12th, dropping to his knees to push away a 20-yard pile driver from Mark Baguley.

AVRO though had not come to make up the party numbers and Daniel Grimshaw fired a shot wide before the lively Rico Stewart flashed an effort across the face of goal.

However, there was a purpose about Heys play that always threatened to unravel the visitors and on the half hour they opened the scoring. As AVRO struggled to clear their lines, Adam Hilton blocked an attempted clearance by Hall and the ball dropped invitingly to Baguley to slot into the unguarded net.

Four minutes later Heys doubled their tally. Greg Wills broke down the left and whipped in a cross that caused real problems and Hilton latched onto the loose ball to finish with an angled shot into the bottom corner.

As the half drew to a close Ash Reece got forward to fire in a low shot from 20 yards which had Hall at full stretch to keep out.

AVRO made a solid start to the second half with former Heys youth midfielder Lee O’Brien’s midfield promptings giving the Heys defence something to think about.

However, it was Heys who remained the more incisive as Dalton McLaughlin saw a shot deflected wide.

Good interplay between O’Brien and Stewart opened up the Heys defence shortly after but he shot wide and with it went the visitors last hopes of salvaging something from the game as Heys broke forward to increase their lead in the 70th minute.

Hilton and McLaughlin worked the ball well to find Wills, who cut into the box before rifling a shot inside the near post.

An ultimately comfortable win was sealed in the 86th minute when Pete Hickford played a one-two with Jon Stephenson before going through and slot home Heys fourth.

The party then started as the players took the applause and collected their medals which were presented by Jean Carroll, wife of late Chairman John.

Heys legendary Manager of the 60's/70's Peter Gilmour then presented Captain Brad Lyons with the Championship Trophy.
