Heys pep title bid with win at Stockport Georgians

Prestwich Heys maintained their quest for the Premier Division title with a comfortable 2-0 win at Stockport Georgians.

The reigning Champions had pushed Heys all the way when the teams met in the Gilgryst Cup semi -final two weeks ago but they never really troubled Jon Lyons’ side today once Lee Bruce had given them a 25th minute lead.

However, whilst Heys controlled matters from that point they found the second goal elusive raising the possibility that a mistake, cruel bounce or a moment of brilliance could bring the hosts back into the game.

That moment of magic did arrive in the 75th minute but to Heys delight it came from their centre half Jake Wood.

As Heys pressed forward Dalton McLaughlin appeared to be brought down on the edge of the area but the referee ruled differently. It was to prove a decision in Heys favour as amidst frustrated cries for a free kick Georgians were unable to clear their lines and the ball broke to Wood some 25 yards from goal.

Without hesitation he unleashed an absolute pile driver of a shot that flew into the top corner in the blink of an eye.

Georgians have struggled to replicate their form in cup football in the League this season and started the game on the back of five successive defeats to leave them languishing in the bottom three. With Heys knowing three points was a must for their title hopes the game opened cautiously.

Both sides had fleeting moments of promise but it was not until the 17th minute that either goal was significantly troubled. A cross by Erike Sousa fizzed around the box before Jamie Baguley’s shot was tipped over the bar.

With Heys taking a grip of the game and moving the ball about with increasing confidence they took the lead in the 25th minute.

A break from deep by Max White took him into the heart of the home defence before an astute pass created space for the impressive Bruce and the Heys striker delivered an assured angled shot into the bottom corner.

Heys came close to doubling their lead in the 39th minute when Baguley advanced from midfield to fire in a low 20 yard shot that came off the foot of the post.

Half time did little to dim Heys momentum. Sousa saw a shot deflected wide in the 50th minute and Baguley saw a free kick held by the ‘keeper.

Although Georgians continued to work hard attempts to gain a foothold in the game floundered on a solid Heys defence.

However, Heys needed that second goal to put the game to bed but when a looping header from Greg Wills was tipped over it looked like it may prove elusive.

Shortly after though came Wood’s breathtaking intervention. A stunning strike matched by an initial moment of stunned silence whilst all absorbed what had happened. Cue Wood wheeling away in triumph, team mates in pursuit and three more points in the bag.
