In a game that ebbed and flowed throughout both teams ran themselves to a standstill with extra time failing to separate them after an encounter that saw woodwork hit, great saves and chances a plenty. Every time one side looked to be gaining the upper hand the other came back to do the same leaving a spot in the 1st round proper still up for grabs.

After an untidy opening it was Heys who had the first real opening as home keeper Tony Aghayere clutched a Lee Grimshaw header out of the air from a Max White corner.

However, this served only to spring the hosts into life as Callum Jakovlevs pulled off a great save to push a Liam O’Neill shot round the post.
From the ensuing corner though Padiham took the lead, as James Dean rose above everyone to head home.

When Jake Hargreaves waltzed through Heys defence before shooting narrowly wide moments later a long afternoon looked on the cards, with only a timely challenge by Jake Wood then stopping Lee Knight going clear.
However, Heys stemmed the flow, with Aghayere coming out to save at the feet of Grimshaw and White going close form a free kick.

In the 24th minute, Heys did draw level. Brad Sixsmith broke through into the penalty area before pulling the ball back, only for his centre to rebound off a defender and Aghayere to then fumble the ball over the line.

A couple of threatening runs by Grimshaw came to nothing as Heys began to edge proceedings but it was also taking some strong defence to contain a Padiham side who were very sharp around the edge of the area.

The half ended with Aghayere pushing a 30-yard shot from White round the post and the Padiham stopper was soon in action after the break as he came off his line to thwart Sixsmith.

The hosts responded though with a quick counter that ended with Jakovlevs dropping smartly to tip a Knight shot round the post. The Heys keeper then followed that with another fine save to keep an O’Neill effort as the home side looked to be taking charge.

White dragged a shot wide shortly after, but the momentum was with Padiham and it took another great save by Jakovlevs just after the hour to keep out a close-range header by Ben Fletcher.

However, in the 68th minute Heys broke to take the lead. On the break, their pace always looked capable of problems and when Grimshaw cut into the box and threatened to go clear he was bundled over, with the referee pointing straight to the spot from which White steered home confidently.

Heys joy however, was short lived as within four minutes Padiham were level. An Adam Jones ball into the box was met by a glancing header from O’Neill that went in off the far post.

The crossbar then came to Heys rescue when O’Neill’s looping shot came off the top of the bar.

Heys were not without threat on the counter with the pace of Wilson-Heyes and Grimshaw causing problems for the home side and the former saw his angled host pushed round the post after breaking into the box.

Dean put a free header wide for Padiham late on before the tie went into extra time, with Heys starting the first period the stronger.

A free-kick from White was tipped over before Jacob Holt headed wide from the corner that followed.

Padiham then responded with a header by Tom Hulme that came off the post.

As the game entered the second period of extra time neither side was able to muster an opening as fatigue set in setting up Tuesday’s replay.
