Gilgryst Cup success also completes a Manchester league double

Heys completed a glorious League and Cup Double and a treble as they won the Gilgryst Cup by defeating Manchester Gregorians 1-0 at Hyde United.

In a remarkable season, Heys have received accolades for their flowing football but this was a night of big hearts and sheer guts ultimately settled by a Mark Baguley strike after just eight minutes.

The Heys striker broke free and showed calm nerves to deliver an exquisite finish, lifting shot from the edge of the area over the advancing keeper.

It capped an impressive opening by Heys who had gone close through Jamie Baguley in the opening minute and had seen Gregs ‘keeper Wolstensholme dive bravely at the feet of Mark Baguley shortly after.

Heys were the dominant side in the opening half hour and might have added to their lead. They hit the bar through Max White in the 23rd minute and were also denied by the linesman failing to spot a Mark Baguley shot had crossed the line before being scrambled to safety on the half hour.

Gregs fashioned their first chance shortly afterwards and it nearly brought an equaliser but Rob Sadler pulled off a great save to keep out a Matt Dodwell shot.

It sparked a good spell for Gregs and on the stroke of half time Sadler had to scurry to get down to a Fairclough free kick.

It was a momentum that the Moss Side outfit carried into the second half as McCance fired over the bar in the opening exchanges as they began to dominate possession.

Mark Baguley fired a free kick over in what was proving to be rare opportunity to get forward for Heys as the toil of the season looked to be catching upon up on Jon Lyons side.

Running on empty they displayed tremendous spirit and determination though in a bid to to keep Gregs out. They somehow seemed to always have a man in the right place to get a decisive block or tackle in to frustrate their opponents.

When they were breached Sadler was equal to it pulling off a great save low down to keep out a Huntly shot.

Heys did almost sew the game up in the 75th minute but Ash Reece’s 25 yard free kick was clawed from under the bar by Wolstensholme.

Dalton McLaughlin then burst into the box but Wolstensholme smothered as the Heys man looked to finish.

In a nerve wracking finale, former Heys striker Martin Love saw a free kick just clear the bar as Heys hung grimly to their lead.

Deep into added time it looked like Gregs had found a way through. With 21 players in the Heys box Wolstenholme swung in a free kick and with maroon shirts bearing down on goal it seemed Gregs must score but amidst the mass of bodies Sadler emerged ball in hands.
It ensured a seventh clean sheet for Heys on the bounce and another trophy.
