Heys reach Atherton Charity Cup semi finals

Heys cruised into the semi-finals of the Atherton Charity Cup with a 6-0 win at Breightmet United tonight.

It was the third time a Heys side have beat the Bolton side in little over a month following a 5-0 win in the Kenyon Cup and a 6-0 victory in the group stage of the Charity Cup.

Tonight saw Heys field a mixed team combining Youth and experience. The result was never in any real doubt.

Lewis Smith had a header cleared off the line in the opening minutes before young keeper Sam Modlinsky marked his return from Ashton United with a good save from a free kick.

However, Heys were soon in front when Lee Bruce and Jon Stephenson combined to set up Ryan Cain for a crisp finish from the 12 yards.

Mark Baguley then added a second for Heys with a free kick after Bruce had been fouled.

It wasn’t long before Baguley was adding his second as he headed home from an Ashley Oparah cross.

That’s how it stayed until half time but Heys picked up where they had left off at the start of the second period when Stephenson finished well for a 4-0 lead.

Modlinsky pulled off a fine save, one on one with the Breightmet striker shortly after but it was only a temporary respite for the hosts.

Two of Heys promising youngsters combined for a 5th goal. Cain burst down the wing before crossing for the impressive Lewis Bond to finish at the near post for a deserved goal.

Cain was provider again for Heys sixth and final goal, this time teeing up Craig Thomas (pictured) to drill home and round off an emphatic win.

The semi-finals will be played next Spring.
