Wednesday night, Grimshaw Park, 6.15pm

Heys welcome Springhead to Grimshaw Park on Wednesday night for a fixture that is vital to their Premier Division title hopes.

With Royton, Hindsford and Dukinfield dropping points on Saturday Heys go into the game looking to capitalise on those slip ups and put themselves within sight of the summit.

Indeed victory on Wednesday night and on Saturday against Old Alts would put them top of the table, irrespective of results elsewhere.

It’s a tricky challenge against a Springhead side that have had a mixed season but are always capable of pulling off a result as borne out by their 5-1 rout of Stockport Georgians in January.

Georgians gained a measure of revenge by defeating Springhead 2-0 at the weekend and will be looking for a favour from the Oldham side.

This game is of course a re-arranged fixture after the game earlier in the season was abandoned due to that horrific leg break suffered by Heys’ keeper Damien Rooney. Springhead led in that 2-0 at the time and will be looking to repeat that score line.

When the sides met at Springhead in late September Heys won a remarkable match 5-4, thanks to a last gasp goal from Conor Landers.

Heys had led 4-1 early in the second half and will hope for a winning outcome on Wednesday night if not with quite the same level of drama.

If Heys are looking for a omen, on 16th April 1988, Heys met Springhead in a Manchester League 1st division clash, which was billed as a title decider. Goals from Steve Kirkbride and Darren Lloyd gave Heys a 2-1 win and the side, captained by Adie Moran, went onto win the league.

28 years to the day, how Heys will hope history can repeat itself.
