The Heys boss reflects on the season so far and looks ahead to the rest of the campaign

What have you made of our season so far- has it met your expectations?

Yes and No.

Yes, because we’re in a good position in the League and still in two cup competitions. No, because we’re not top of the League and we always set our targets for being the best.

What would you say is the highlight /best performance of the season?

It must be Sandbach, away, we had everything that day. To win 6-0 at one of our promotion rivals is something but to do so in the manner we did was extremely satisfying. I think it is probably the best performance I have ever seen from a Heys side.

What would you say is the Low point / Worst performance so far?

There’s been a few lows but the Silsden game was a real low. Take nothing away from Silsden, because they played superbly on the night but not one of my players turned up for what was our biggest game of the season so far. Coming so soon after the Sandbach game and on top of a long unbeaten run it was really disappointing.

What have you made of the rest of the League - any surprises?

Silsden have been a surprise. Yes, they finished last season strongly but winning 17 out 17 is different class, no matter what level of football it is. The league has again been very competitive, anyone can beat anyone, which makes their record even more impressive.

What are hopes and aims for the rest of the season?

They remain the same as when we started in August. We have got to win promotion. That’s the target we set at the outset, we are in a good position but need to keep going now and try and make it a reality.

I would also like to see us getting bigger crowds watching. We have had some good crowds, like the Friday night game against Chadderton, but also some very poor turnouts. Everyone is working very hard at the club and the lads are playing some good football. A few more on the gate would make a massive difference.

The squad has evolved over the season with new faces coming in along the way. How do you view the squad?

We have added where we have felt we needed to and if the right player has been available. That’s the same with any club. Overall, though I am pleased with the squad. They’re a great set of lads and it’s important they stick together. It’s a big squad and with the Reserves going, it’s going to be hard to keep everyone happy. However, if we want to win anything we need all 22 lads on board. We have half the League season to play and cup games too, so there will be plenty of opportunities.
