Gilgryst Cup Final preview

The final act of an already remarkable season sees Heys face Manchester Gregorians at Hyde tomorrow night (Thursday) in the Gilgryst Cup Final, 7.45pm.

Having been crowned Premier Division Champions, Heys are looking to complete a Manchester League double by winning the famous old Trophy which has been won by a host of names down the years including City and United in the days of the Busby Babes.

If successful, Jon Lyons' men would also complete a treble following their Bolton Hospital Cup win on Monday night.

The Heys boss could also achieve something quite special in becoming a Gilgryst winner as both a Player with Heys (2003) and now a Manager.

To do so, Heys will have to be at their best. Gregs have been inconsistent this season. Indeed, they go into the game having not won in their last six. However, on their day they can be dangerous opponents.

Their route to the Final bears testimony. Away in every round they have won 2-1 at both Wythenshawe Amateurs and AVRO before most notably securing a 1-0 win at Royton in the semi final.

Heys have won at 2-0 Uppermill, 4-0 at home to Old Alts and on penalties at Stockport Georgians in the semi-final after a 1-1 draw.

In the League this season Heys won both encounters. In the "home " game played at Eccles College in February, Gregs threatened to blow Heys away early on after taking a 1st minute lead. However, Heys roared back with a devastating spell of four goals in seven minutes either side of half time to win 6-1.

At Platt Lane, in the return fixture in April, it proved a much tighter affair with a late Paul Tierney goal giving Heys a vital 1-0 victory.

Gregs possess some talented footballers including Midfielder Matt Dodwell who has received more Man of the Match awards than any other player in the league whilst Martin Love needs no introduction to Heys fans.

After a hectic spell of games in recent months Heys squad continues to be pushed to the limit but Monday's nights win over Colls, where half a dozen of the season's regulars were missing, showed the ability at Lyons' disposal. Some of those who were missing are likely to come into contention tomorrow night.
