Late rally but Heys have to settle for a point

Heys collected a point from another performance which showed the strong work ethic and commitment running through the team, but will rue the fact that they could not snatch the second goal that would have sealed all three points.

Chadderton came out of the blocks strongest, Liam Chambers drilling a shot wide and Russ Saunders making a fine save at the post soon afterwards in the opening few minutes.

Heys responded well, Jamie Sinnott releasing Shelton Payne, who was pulled down, Justin Pickering taking the free-kick which just cleared the crossbar.

Dom Slaven then cleverly nodded the ball on for Payne to burst down the right flank, but he overcooked his cross.

More chances came for Heys, from broken play, Pickering found himself in space and fired in a decent effort, Max White curled a free-kick just over and then Pickering again found himself in a great position to open the scoring but he blasted over at the far post.

Sinnott could not keep the his effort down as he stretched for the ball just after the hour mark after a spell where Heys could easily have lead.

Chadderton’s Leon Iluobe, who caused Heys problems throughout, got behind the defence on twenty-two minutes, but the home side could not get a shot in.

Payne went in the referee’s book a minute, but quickly made amends with a superb run down the right and a great cross that was begging to be attacked, but there was no-one on hand to convert.

The home side then had their first gilt-edged opportunity when Jack Turnbill used his strength to burst forward and square for Chambers, but he could not keep his powerful shot down.

Chaddy were flying now, and there was another let-off for Heys when Turnbill glanced home a fine header, only to see the Assistant’s flag raised for offside, which must have been a tight call.

Turnbill blasted another shot over the bar in the closing minutes of the half, and he was then fouled, the resulting free-kick was played dangerously across goal, but Heys stood firm and went in goalless.

The second half started well for Prestwich, Payne again in the middle of the action, jinking through Chadderton challenges before hitting his effort well over.

Pickering found himself with space to attack, the goalkeeper lost the ball, but a defender was on hand to hoy the ball clear.

Adie Bellamy was on hand to clear a cross out for a corner, which was well defended by Heys.

Just before the hour, Chaddy substitute Sam Riley made a great run and cross and Chambers brought an outstanding save from Saunders.

A minute later came a pivotal moment in the match when Will Shawcross came on for Sinnott.

The Heys winger immediately started to stretch the home defence, creating space for his team mates to exploit.

Rio Wilson-Heyes worked himself into space superbly, but dragged his shot the wrong side of the post.

At the other end, Saunders punched the ball clear for a corner before Heys made a second change, Brad Sixsmith replacing the hard-working Pickering.

Two minutes later, and Heys took the lead and Shawcross was the provider, riding two tackles before slipping the ball through for Payne, who made no mistake.

Shawcross went close himself shortly afterwards before disaster struck, Illuobe managing to get a shot round Saunders which looked like it ricocheted off a Heys player on its way into the net.

With twenty minutes left, the game became very stretched as both sides upped the ante, Slaven seeing a shot smothered after a Shawcross ball into the box was only half-cleared.

Bellamy did well to head a ball back across goal as Heys threatened again, and then Jordan Pendlebury joined the action on seventy-six minutes with Max White going off.

Connor Berry, who had a decent game for Chaddy, was then dismissed for a second yellow card and Heys went for the jugular with a man advantage.

Wilson-Heyes and Shawcross both fizzed efforts at goal, but all credit to Chadderton who defended solidly.

Tricky footwork from Wilson-Heyes took him past two defenders, only to see his effort hit the side netting, before a quickly taken free-kick released him again, this time his driven shot being deflected for a corner.

Payne then found himself free at the tightest of angles, and with a forest of legs anticipating a cut back, he tried to catch the ‘keeper out at the near post but instead hit the side netting.

The ball continued to be peppered into the home penalty area, but Chadderton’s centre-half pairing were resolute and both sides had to settle for a point.
