Heys back to winning ways with impressive display

Writes Rick Barrett

After back to back defeats Heys were looking for a response as they travelled to Cougar Park to face Steeton in the Hallmark Security League Division One North.

The afternoon did not start well when centre half Sven Gibson pulled up in the warm up with a tight hamstring forcing Heys into a re-shuffle prior to kick off.

After a tight opening quarter, the first chance fell to a lively looking Heys on 14 minutes when striker Lee Bruce broke down the right and floated a lovely cross into the box where Will Shawcross connected with a header that went just over the bar.

Heys pressing was rewarded in the 20th minute when a Dom Slaven pass found Shawcross on the left, who dinked inside Steeton full back Joe Mason before launching a peach of a shot from 12 yards low to the keepers left, to the delight of the travelling Heys support.

Shortly after, in the 24th minute the game was paused as referee Zac Bamber pulled up with a hamstring injury and after a brief pause his place was taken by one of his assistants.

Heys continued to go forward with Shawcross looking very lively down the wing as they looked to exploit the hosts high back line, looking to catch them offside at every opportunity.

However, it was Steeton who ended the half the brighter as Luke Baldwin tested Michael Smith with a free kick before Fred Maddocks went close.

Overall though Heys were looking tight the back when Steeton did pose a threat with Darius Photiou and Jacob Holt standing ground and wiping out potential danger.

After a quiet opening to the second period Heys Manager John Lyons made two substitutions, who were to make a massive impact in the final half hour.

Lee Bruce and Liam Healey, who both put in a great shift, were replaced by recent signing Cory Knight and much to the delight of the Heys following, Danny White, making his comeback after a long-term injury.

The changes had an immediate impact when in the 63rd minute, White, with literally his first touch, knocked a lovely ball into the box and Knight connected with a bullet header past the stranded home keeper for Heys second of the afternoon.

As the rain came down hard, Heys revelled in it, playing a fantastic passing game, making full use of the wide men to which Steeton had little response.

Heys made another change in the 70th minute when new signing from Chadderton James Dwyer replaced Lee Grimshaw and slotted straight into the middle of the park with confidence.

Although Smith had to be alert to palm away a shot from Ben Clarkson, Heys continued to look the stronger and wrapped up the game with a third goal on 85 minutes.

A lovely ball through the middle from White found the eager Knight who ran through and chipped the ball over the home keeper from 12 yards to seal the points.

Heys continued to revel in what was slowly turning into a mud bath and when the final whistle came it was smiles all around with Heys impressive away following giving the team a standing ovation after an impressive display of power and pace.

TEAM: Michael Smith, Darius Photiou, Carl Fitton, Liam Healey, Jacob Holt, Jake Wood (Capt), Brad Sixsmith, Dom Slaven, Lee Bruce, Lee Grimshaw, Will Shawcross Subs: Jamie Baguley, Rio Wilson-Heyes, Cory Knight (for Bruce 58 mins), Danny White (for Healey 62 mins), James Dwyer (for Grimshaw 64 mins)
