Five different scorers in Heys victory

writes Scott White

A remarkable incident-packed second-half at Victoria Park saw Heys romp away to a 5-1 victory as the home side imploded after getting themselves back into the game.

The first half was far from one-way traffic, Nelson made their intentions clear from the kick-off, and had the first chance, Mike Smith saving from Nelson’s lively centre-forward Gareth Hill.

Heys’ first clear opening came when Danny White gloated in a decent free-kick, but Marcel Wsiewicz was alive to the danger and collected.

Nelson marched right back up the pitch and Smith pushed the ball behind for a corner, which was cleared.

James Wolfenden, returning to Nelson for the first start since joining Heys, made a good impression on the right flank, and was involved in a neat move with Danny White and Lee Grimshaw, White collecting the final ball, but he could not get a clean shot away.

Nelson skipper Ash Brierley was within an inch of opening the scoring on ten minutes, his long-range drive being pushed onto the post by Smith, the ball then rebounded back across the face of goal and out for a corner.

Jacob Wood made a couple of testing crosses whilst in support of Wolfenden on the right flank, and Heys had a great opening when White again burst into the home penalty area, but again, the ball got caught under his feet and his scuffed effort was deflected away for a corner.

Hill was again a threat on the Heys goal, his neat footwork allowing him a clean shot on goal that was well collected by Smith.

The see-saw half continued, Nelson again going close before there was mayhem in the home penalty area as the loose ball rattled around before being cleared.

Gareth Hill again went close, dancing past Heys defenders before slipping his effort wide.

Just after the half-hour, the deadlock was broken, Shawcross fired in a cross that was deflected up high into the air, Grimshaw and White rose to challenge for the ball with the home keeper, the ball then fell to Liam Healey who drilled home for his first goal for Heys.

Three minutes later, Wood was replaced by Darius Photiou after the Heys captain pulled up with a back problem.

Healey then changed from scorer to provider when he slipped a neat ball through, but no-one was on message to collect.

Heys had two more good chances, Shawcross cut inside before shooting, and minutes later, Slaven rose to head onto the bar before it was cleared.

Heys made a second change at half-time as Mark Ayres made a welcome return to the team, replacing Carl Fitton, Jacob Holt moving across to full-back.

The second half drama started within two minutes of the restart, Dom Slaven tangled with a Nelson player on the touchline, and it quickly disintegrated into a whole lot of pushing and shoving with players running in to get involved.

Slaven for Heys, and Charlie Lloyd, Jamie Wynne and Hill for Nelson were all cautioned.

Danny White went incredible close with a free-kick which fooled Wsiewicz all ends up as he curled an effort just wide of the near post with everyone waiting for a ball across the penalty area.

On fifty-two minutes, the Admirals pulled level, Ayres making a fine saving tackle, but Alexander Grice curled the loose ball over Smith and into the top corner of the net.

Heys had to wait four minutes to regain the lead, White chased a crossed ball down, the turned and floated over the ball to Lee Grimshaw, who headed home.

Three minutes later, an amazing passage of play saw Heys add another goal, and the home keeper dismissed.

There looked to be no danger for Nelson, but somehow, that ball bounced back into the Nelson goal off Wolfenden, and immediately after the referee blew for the goal, he brandished a red card at Wieswicz for something said.

After Nelson protests, the game got underway again becoming tetchier by the minute.

Just after the hour, Grimshaw almost grabbed Heys’ fourth goal, but his shot was parried away before Ayres bicycle-kick narrowly cleared the crossbar.

On sixty-seven minutes, Kieran Sherlock replaced Danny White, with the hardworking James Dwyer moving into a more familiar midfield role.

Healey was again at the heart of a neat Heys move, working with Wolfenden and Grimshaw, but the latter’s strike lacked power.

The result was put beyond doubt on seventy-four minutes when Dwyer headed powerfully home form Shawcross corner to net his first goal in a Heys shirt.

Five minutes later, the noisy band of Heys supporters was treated to a rare and wonderful sight, Darius Photiou picking a ball laid off by Slaven and blasted a superb effort into the net to put Heys 5-1 ahead.

Nelson fought to the end, and Jake Lloyd squandered a great chance when he blasted over after the ball had been worked forward well.

So Heys collected a 5-1 victory, the score line was probably a little harsh on Nelson, but the damage was done by the dismissal at a moment when the game was still in the balance.

Heys Line-up: Mike Smith, Jacob Holt, Carl Fitton, Liam Healey, James Dwyer, Jacob Wood, Danny White, Dom Slaven, Lee Grimshaw, James Wolfenden, Will Shawcross. Subs: Darius Photiou (for Wood), Mark Ayres (for Fitton), Kieran Sherlock (for White), Brad Sixsmith (Not used)
