Heys through in Lancashire FA Trophy

By Rick Barrett

It was game on at the second attempt as Prestwich Heys travelled to North West Counties Premier League side Padiham FC on a chilly, but more importantly dry night, for this Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy 1st round tie.

Cup football was a welcome break pre kick off after the disappointing 4-0 league defeat to Lower Break last time out and Heys were looking for a positive response in this one.

Heys were straight into it from the first minute getting a grip of the midfield battle, pressing forward and with Bradley Sixsmith and Danny White pulling the strings they created the first chance on 13 minutes when the lively Jacob Holt unleashed a shot from the edge of the box which Padiham keeper Matt Holmes got down to save.

Heys were in the thick of the action on 28 minutes when again Jacob Holt knocked a lovely ball over from the left onto the head of recent signing from Nelson Jack Coop but it went straight into the Padiham keepers hands from 8 yards out.

As the half went on Padiham were matching Heys endeavour in the middle and it was becoming a tight affair with chances few and far between.

However, shortly before the half time break a lovely move for the visitors saw Sixsmith make a lovely run across the park before finding James Sinnott down the left. He beat the Padiham full back before picking out the in running Holt whose shot forced keeper Holmes to save his right.

So the teams went in goalless at half time and as expected the home side were quick out of the blocks after the break with Heys Keeper Russ Saunders keeping Padiham at bay with a couple of decent saves.

Heys kept up the midfield battle well and looked solid at the back with centre half Adrian Bellamy particularly standing out with a commanding display.

As the half went on both teams were still trying to get the upper hand and Heys sub Anthony Hall, who had come on for the hard working Sinnott on 63 minutes, was looking lively trying to find the breakthrough but without really testing the home Keeper.

Heys frustration in front of goal was complete in the 90th minute when winger Rio Wilson-Heyes blasted over the bar from the edge of the box.

So the referee blew and we were straight to penalties and it was an impressive display of spot kicks from both sides.

We arrived at 5-5 with successful Heys kicks from Jacob Wood, Anthony Hall, Max White, Sam O'Donnell and Jacob Holt and as the tension mounted,Adam Morning stepped up for Padiham, but his kick was saved by Russ Saunders much to the delight of the Heys fans.

And so it was down to Dylan Stringer-Moth, who returned to the club in the summer, to step up and grab the headlines and he duly did hammering confidently past the Padiham keeper to send the impressive Heys contingent home happy if a little disappointed about the lack of goals despite a lot of possession. However, all in all a great display against a team from the league above.

Heys will now play West Didsbury and Chorlton away in the next round in week commencing 4th November.
