Jon Lyons firms up his squad to start the season

It's been a busy week for Heys Manager Jon Lyons and Secretary Scott White as they finalise the squad to start the new season at Golcar tomorrow.

Heys go into the season with 27 players on the roster, a squad that comprises established personnel, some familiar faces returning and a host of new signings.

Of those the late acquisition of Shelton Payne will catch the eye of many followers of the non-league game. An attacking midfielder / Striker Shelton has bags of experience having played in the League of Wales and at the likes of Chorley, FC United and Ramsbottom. He joins Heys after a promotion winning season at our neighbours Radcliffe FC.

He will form part of a new look forward line up. Haydn Foulds, who came through the youth ranks at Oldham and has also figured for New Mills and Irlam has signed and is joined by Robson Brown who has played at FC United.

Other new faces include centre-half Adrian Bellamy, who after several seasons at Bacup, brings his experience at the likes of Bradford City and Salford City to Adie Moran Park.
Daniel Greene joins us after being a key figure at St. Helens Town whilst joining him in the midfielders is Tyler Stubbs form our neighbours Walshaw Sports whilst Jordan Pendlebury has graduated through the Bury Football College.

Those returning to the club are Danny Vincent, Justin Pickering, Dylan Moth and Rio Wilson-Heyes.

Heys go into the season with three goalkeepers, Thomas Simpson, Kyle Haslam and Russell Saunders. The latter has figured for Heys on occasion in the past couple of seasons and is already remembered for “that save” in the last minute of the League Cup Final success in 2017.

All told, it’s a squad of the established tried and trusted, new blood and one looking to put Heys in the frame for one of those four promotion spots.

Speaking last night, Jon Lyons said "I felt we lacked goals last season so it was important we brought in more attacking options. Hopefully Shelton and Haydn can play a big part in achieving that and those around, who have got goals in their locker, will contribute too"

"All told I think it's the best squad I’ve had since taking over at Heys. Hopefully we can kick on now and get promoted"
