Heys Coach pays tribute to players after 1874 win

Heys Coach Cathal McLoughlin has paid tribute to Heys Players after their victory over 1874 Northwich in the FA Vase.

Cathal, who joined Heys in the Summer, took charge of the team yesterday in the absence of Jon Lyons, Danny White and Jake Wood, overseeing a superb defensive display that booked Heys a home tie with Charnock Richard in the 2nd Qualifying Round on 14th September (3pm).

Speaking to the North West Counties League website Cathal said" Prior to the game we knew this was going to be a tough challenge, however, we were 5 unbeaten in the League prior to this game so we were taking a lot of positive points into the game. We knew a few key players were missing and this gave an opportunity for our younger lads to break into the team. Our players knew what we expected of them prior to the game and we stuck by our game plan thoroughly."

"At times we got lucky, and had to soak up a lot of pressure deep in the final third, but our players matched 1874 throughout the full game. Our defensive line was solid including an exceptional performance from Russ, who displayed a masterclass performance in goal."

"Against the run of play, we took the lead after a great finish from Picks. The players settled as this took some pressure off us and we began to play our football. The quality of our players was shown both on and off the ball, and we looked very dangerous on the counter-attack. Individual performances were of the highest quality, but each player gave 100% and that's all we ask week in week out."

"Late in the game it became very end to end and we just tried to counter-attack on the transition using the speed we have going forward, which threatened 1874. The game was a reflection of all the hard work and resilience the players have shown since the start of pre-season. We look forward to the visit of Charnock Richard to Adie Moran Park in the next round. "
