Heys are looking for public support in their bid to secure funding from the Skipton Building Society Grassroots Giving Fund.

If successful the money received will go towards setting up a Heys Community Programme and open the door for further funding opportunities.

Heys are one of the shortlisted groups looking to gain funding. The public is invited to cast their votes to decide who will be awarded £500. Voting is open until 12 October and this year there are 165 pots of cash to giveaway.

A Skipton spokeperson said "Now in its sixth year, Grassroots Giving has already helped more than 800 community groups across the UK which might normally struggle to attract any funding. This year we have received 743 applications with a wide and wonderful range of inspirational stories".

"Grassroots Giving was launched in 2013 to celebrate the Society’s 160th anniversary and proved to be an immediate success. It was designed to reflect our mutual roots and established to help people and communities to help themselves."

Roger Goodwin on behalf of Heys said
"In the next 12 months, we have plans to setup a community programme to further develop our work in the local community using sport as a tool for social change.

With recent additions to the committee, the club is moving in a clear direction. Having secured a place in the FA Cup for the first time in 35 years, we have an exciting season ahead.

We are a focal point of our local community and we currently organise Fireworks displays, have a Community open day and give opportunities to local people to play football. We also allow our facilities to be used by the local community and schools.

We have recently recruited some new volunteers, who we are working on mentoring and giving an opportunity to develop their skills to help them get back into full time employment in football.

The £500 would help us setup the community programme. The funding would be used as seed funding to allow us to access more funding and create an exciting community programme that uses football and sport to create social change. We have plans for a disability sports programme, volunteer mentoring and creating opportunities for people not in education, employment or training to gain sports qualifications.

Football has the power to impact in a positive way in the local community. We are a fully inclusive club and look forward to providing further opportunities to the local community. Please support our bid"
