Woodward double helps put Heys within three points of the title

Heys Reserves went top of the table and moved within three points of lifting the Manchester League Division One Title with a 4-1 win over Beechfield United at Adie Moran Park last night.

They now lead long time leaders Heyside by two points, with two games in hand and can be crowned Champions if they beat Leigh Athletic at home on Saturday (2pm).

In last night’s game Richard Woodward (pictured) struck early on to give Heys the lead before Steve Charles then sprinted clear in the 35th minute to give his side a 2-0 interval advantage.

Heys looked comfortable throughout the half and on the back of some good football might have enjoyed a bigger lead.

However, Beechfield proved a different proposition in the second half and gave the Heys defence some anxious moments.

Indeed, when Liam Boswell extended the hosts lead on the hour it was somewhat against the run of the play, the Heys striker pouncing from close range after a goal mouth scramble had seen the ball come back off the bar.

The visitors refused to lie down though and four minutes later reduced the arrears with a super free kick into the top corner.

Any hopes of a comeback were dashed in the 70th minute though when Woodward pounced on a cross field pass to go through and calmly steer the ball past the keeper.

Beechfield hit the bar late on but it was Heys night as their fifth successive win guaranteed a promotion placing. Heys must now wait to see if the FA will approve them stepping up into the Premier Division under the National League system rules.

For now, though the focus is on Saturday and the visit of a Leigh side who were the last team to beat Heys on 15th April, winning 3-1. Having drawn 0-0 at Heyside last weekend Leigh will doubtless be looking to have a further say in the destination of the title.

Admission to the game is FREE so come and give the lads your support.
