Mark Baguley strike defeats Gregorians

Heys won the Gilgryst Cup by defeating Manchester Gregorians 1-0 at Hyde United tonight.

In doing so they completed a League and Cup Double and a treble following their Hospital Cup success on Monday.

In a remarkable season, Heys have received accolades for their flowing football but this was a night of big hearts and sheer guts.

The game was settled by a Mark Baguley strike after just eight minutes. The Heys striker breaking free to lift a shot over the advancing keeper.

Heys were the more accomplished side in the opening half hour and hit the bar through Max White and were also denied by the linesman failing to spot a Mark Baguley shot had crossed the line before being scrambled to safety.

Gregs came into towards half time and Rob Sadler pulled off a great save to deny Matt Dodwell.

The second half though belonged to Gregorians. They pushed Heys back for long spells as the toil of the season caught up on Jon Lyons side.

Running on empty they displayed tremendous spirit and determination to keep Gregs out.

And so on the same night Heys promotion to the North West Counties League was officially confirmed (more tomorrow) Heys had completed a treble.

At a club rich in history this has been a remarkable season lifting Jon Lyons, his Management team and players up there alongside the all time Heys legends.
