Title hopes take a knock on a luckless afternoon

Heys nine match unbeaten run was ended at Grimshaw Park this afternoon as they were beaten 2-1 by Old Alts.

Although the defeat is a setback to their title hopes Heys still have their destiny in their own hands, with four games to play, but face a huge clash at Champions Hindsford next Saturday.

In today's game Heys were somewhat unlucky as they had a goal disallowed, hit the post 3 times and were denied, in the second half inparticular, by some dogged defending by a resolute Old Alts.

Indeed, the visitors, bouyed by their midweek win at Stockport Georgians, which ended a run of seven defeats, played some great football that belied their season long struggles.

They took the lead after four minutes with a close range finish from Josh Gittings after Heys has squandered two opportunities to clear their lines.

Indeed, Heys were hesitant early on and struggled to contain their opponents for whom the victory gives a fighting chance of avoiding relegation.

As the half progressed Heys began to turn the screw and deservedley levelled in the 42nd minute when Gareth Walsh (pictured) headed home from a corner.

Heys dominated the second half but the woodwork, block tackles and a series of near misses kept the game in the mix before Gittings grabbed the decisive goal for Old Alts in the 76th minute.

Even then Heys could have got something with George Powell hitting the post in the last minute.

Full report to follow.
