Victory at Hindsford secures last four berth

Heys booked a place in the semi-finals of the Atherton Charity Cup with a 2-0 win at Hindsford tonight.

Goals from Paul Tierney and Jamie Treanor gave Jon Lyons side a hard earned win against their Manchester League Premier Division rivals and reigning Champions who also won this trophy last season.

Strong in defence and incisive in attack Heys produced the consumate away performance to frustrate their hosts.

Hindsford enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges but with defences on top chances were at a premium.

The hosts went close with a couple of shots from the edge of the area before Heys fashioned their first chance when Treanor latched onto a quick throw in to find space but he pulled his shot wide.

Heys had the ball in the net in the 32nd minute courtesy of a brilliant volley from Mark Drew but the goal was ruled out as Marvin Walters was adjudged to have been offside in the lead up play from a free kick.

Hopwood then flashed a shot across the face of goal as the game opened up a little and it was Heys who capitalised on the extra space by taking a 43rd minute lead. (pictured)

A diagonal through ball unlocked the hosts defence and Tierney went through to finish with a low angled shot into the bottom corner.

Hindsford started the second period at a lively pace and Hopwood
had Heys young 'keeper Sam Modlinsky scurrying with a rasping drive.

However, Heys were looking solid in defence and limiting their opponents to speculative shots from the edge of the area, whilst maintaining a threat on the break themselves.

In the 67th minute they added to their lead. Mark Drew let fly from 20 yards with a free kick that the Hindsford keeper could only parry and Treanor was on hand to steer the loose ball into net.

The game then settled into a pattern of home possession and Heys counter attacks.

However, the Heys defence, marshalled superbly by Gareth Walsh dealt comfortably with any threat, keeping the hosts at arms length to move comfortably into the last four.
