3-0 defeat has Heys boss fuming

Manager Jon Lyons was left fuming as Heys suffered a 3-0 defeat in their pre-season friendly at Beechfield United today.

The Manchester League 1st division side were deserved winners in the game played at Salford Sports Village after which the Heys boss tore into his side.

Lyons emerged from the dressing room to describe his team's display as "embarassing and littered with school boy errors" .

It was certainly not the sort of performance anyone could have been hoping for or expecting seven days before the start of the new season particularly coming on the back of some encouraging pre-season form.

Heys started well enough with early possession but careless passing proved their undoing in the 7th minute as the home side capitilsed with an assured finish.

The goal gave the hosts an impetus they really looked like losing. Hardworking, sharp on attack and resolute in defence they stifled a Heys side short on ideas and enthusiasm.

Indeed they missed an absolute golden chance to double their lead before Heys finally mustered a chance on goal in the 22nd minute when a Darius Photiou header was held.

However, Beechfield did increase their lead in the 25th minute with a cracking run and finish that beat Ricardo Reeves in the Heys goal all ends up.

Towards the end of the half Heys showed some better signs with Jon Lyons seeing a free kick tipped round the post and Danny Eyres seeing a shot pushed onto the bar.

Heys looked to up the tempo at the start of the second half but continually floundered around goal as over elaboration and sloppy passing played into the hands of their hard working hosts.

Despite long periods of possession it was not until the 80th minute that a meaningful chance was carved out with Paul Tierney hitting the bar.

However, that came only moments after Beechfield had put the game to bed with a third goal. A swift break saw Heys defence all at sea allowing the home striker to almost walk the ball into the net.

Heys will have to raise there game several levels in all areas with the Kenyon Cup quarter final to come on Tuesday night and of greater significance the start of the new league season at home
to Stockport Georgians next Saturday.

Team: Reeves, Photiou, Wills, Eyres, Woodcock, Graham, Treanor, J. Lyons, Drew, McKay, Love Subs: McNally, McGreevy, Sousa.

Heys Reserves had a better day winning 6-2 at Beechfield.

Jeff Kavanagh's side led 5-1 at half time on the back of some fine football.

The match also saw a goalscoring return to action, after a year out with injury, of Brad Lyons, who played the first 45 minutes.
