Denham wonder strike earns point

In a fiercely contested and highly entertaining derby Heys were held to a 1-1 draw by Walshaw Sports this afternoon.

In front of the largest crowd of the season Heys had to come from behind against a Walshaw side reduced to ten men after 16 minutes when Lee Chapman was sent off following a bad challenge on Erike Sousa.

However, it did not prevent the visitors taking the lead in the 24th minute with a superbly worked goal matched by an equally fine finish by Dominic Slaven.

Walshaw arguably edged the first half but Heys went in level thanks to a stunning 31st minute equaliser from Chris Denham.

There seemed little danger as the ball drifted into the Walshaw penalty area but the visitors made a hash of clearing and Denham seized on it to launch a ferocious angled volley into the back of the net.

Heys looked to press home their extra man in the second half and missed a couple of good early chances giving Walshaw something to hold onto and it was not until the last fifteen minutes that it looked liked their resistance might break.

Gareth Walsh saw a header cleared off the line and one saved superbly by Jordan McBrair who also denied Sousa whilst Phil Woodcock also saw a shot blocked as Heys rallied in vain.
