Late goals give visitors victory

Heys were beaten 3-1 by West Didsbury in their pre-season friendly this afternoon.

In stifling hot conditions at Sandgate Road two goals in the final quarter of an hour saw the North West Counties Premier Division side take the spoils in a tight contest.

Despite the heat both sides started at a lively pace before Didsbury began to emerge the stronger to pen Heys back.

However, Heys defence stuck together to deny the visitors any clear opportunities.

Indeed the best chance of the half came Heys way in the 27th minute when Erike Sousa found space only to be denied by a smothering save by the 'keeper.

It was the prelude to a better spell for Heys but just as they appeared to be gaining the upper hand Didsbury took the lead in the 40th minute.

Sam Mitten showed some good skill to work an opening for himself on the edge of the area and then drill low past Rob Sadler.

Heys made a bright start to the second half, carrying a greater attacking threat than they had in the first period and they were rewarded with the equaliser in the 64th minute.

A great cross field ball from Sousa opened up the Didsbury defence and the pass was met by a finish of equal quality from Jamie Treanor as he curled a shot into the far corner. (see picture)

Phil Woodcock headed over and George Powell saw a shot saved low as Heys pressed.

However, Didsbury were still a threat themselves on attack and they regained the lead in the 75th minute from the penalty spot. Mark Rogers slotting home after Gareth Walsh was adjuded to have handled.

With both sides tiring the game became increasingly stretched with opportunities at both ends..

As Heys pushed increasing numbers forward in search of the equaliser Didsbury broke in the 90th minute to seal the win with a lightning break out of defence that ended with Jordan Poole lofting the ball over the advancing Sadler.

Heys manager Jon Lyons was happier with performance of his side today.

He said on twitter "Good response from the lads today. Tuesday was not to our high standards but today we played as a team."

Team: Sadler, McNally, G. Powell, Winstanley, Walsh, Sousa, J. Lyons, Tierney, McKay, McGreevy, Subs: Treanor, Photiou, Mody, Cain.

Heys Reserves went down 4-3 in their friendly at Old Stretfordians.
