Steve Braithwaite and Jimmy Davies meet up again at Heys

A one-time trophy winning Heys Management team met up again at our game with Sandbach last night.

Steve Braithwaite and his Assistant Jimmy Davies were in charge of Heys in the late 80's.

After losing their North West Counties League status, Heys found themselves in Division One of the Manchester League, effectively a two-division drop.

Having failed to gain promotion in their first season at that level, under soon to become Salford Manager Alan Kershaw, Heys turned to Steve and Jimmy.

What followed was a memorable season that saw runs to the last eight of the Lancashire Shield and Manchester Amateur Cup but was crowned by the winning of the Manchester League 1st Division Title.

Playing their last 15 games in 38 days Heys beat AVRO and Springhead to the title by a point, although they did so with games to spare, losing their last two games.

The team was made up of local lads which included the likes of Adie Moran, Andy and Joe Murty, Mike Openshaw, Graham Powell, Mark Thomas, Mark O'Brien, and Paul Davidge, the latter himself to become a title winning Manager in 1996. (Apologies to those I have not included)

The 1987-88 season is a particular special one as it ended a barren period of 15 years without a trophy and was the last silverware to be won at our old home of Grimshaws.

Steve and Jimmy will always have a special place in Heys history and hopefully we will see them and other Heys Old Boys on 14th April for our "Old Boys Day" when we play Stockport Town.
