Seven first half goals help sink Little Lever

Heys roared into the semi finals of the Kenyon Cup with an 8-0 home win over Little Lever tonight.

Playing their first game since the ground was renamed Adie Moran Park, Jon Lyons side totally dismantled a Little Lever side, that had been unbeaten in the group stages, and led 7-0 at the break.

It took only 3 minutes to open the scoring when Chris Denham dispossessed a defender and drilled a shot low into the bottom corner.

It was goal that effectively summed up what was to unfold in the first half as Heys proved too quick for their opponents both in thought and movement.

The second goal came in the 8th minute. This time a towering goal kick from Ben Lever was seized on by Paul Tierney who chipped the advancing 'keeper before rolling the ball into the empty net.

Heys were reduced to ten men in the 18th minute when Marvin Walters was dismissed for retaliation after appearing to be elbowed.

However, Heys made light of being man short by increasing their lead four minutes later. Erike Sousa burst through the middle and despite the attentions of two defenders the ball ended in the back of the net as a forlorn attempt at a clearance rebounded off the Heys man into the net

Tierney pulled a shot wide moments later as Heys moved forward at pace but the next goal didn't come until the 36th minute.

A great passing move culminated in Ryan McGreevy crossing low for Denham to shoot home off the inside the post.

It signalled a rush of goals as the visitors almost capitulated. Denham and Sousa linked superbly to give Tierney a tap in before McGreevy dribbled through to add a sixth in the 44th minute, scoring at the second attempt after his first effort had hit the post.

There was still time for one more before the half time break as Sousa broke through the middle to slot home Heys seventh.

Heys made a raft of changes at half time as the visitors, to their credit, put together some good football to enjoy the better of the opening exchanges.

Lever saved well, low down to preserve Heys clean sheet before McGreevy got the scoreboard moving again in the 65th minute with a deft chip over the keeper for goal number eight.

Heys continued to create chances with Sousa hitting the post but Little Lever were not without their moments as they showed commendable spirit to make a fight of it in the second half when they could quite easily have folded after their first half drubbing.

Heys will now play away to either Haslingden St. Mary's or Tottington United in the semi -finals.

Uppermost in their thoughts now though will the the visit of Stockport Georgians for the opening Manchester League fixture on Saturday, kick off 2pm.

Tonight's team: Lever, Photiou, McNally, Eyres, Walters, Walsh, Sousa, Drew, Tierney, Denham, McGreevy Subs: Graham, McKay, J. Lyons, Wills, Treanor.
