Paul Hinchy reflects on his time as Heys number one and his present role as Goalkeeping coach

Having enjoyed three years of success at Heys the tragedy of Adie Moran's death was a trigger for me to leave.

I very quickly fell out with football after 6 months at Maine Road. I didn't touch a football until my eldest, Max, started playing.

I always followed Heys and when Joffy (Jon Lyons) was appointed as manager the club got even more of my attention. It was great to see him at the helm and I made contact with him about training once again. He obliged, as he always does but I realised quickly that I shouldn't have come back with the same intentions of learning, improving and playing. I needed to fill the position of the goalkeeping coach.

I'd done my FA Level 1 coaching badge when involved at Max's football club but that wasn't the reason for me making that decision.

It was that, when I was at Heys, we had a goalkeeping coach, and it made a massive difference.

In the Heys teams I played in they rarely lost. As a keeper it was the odd moment you were needed in a game because the team dominated play, possession and generally the league. But we were training twice a week with a goalkeeping coach and it made a massive difference.

I'd say 90% of the teams we currently face all have the same process for their keepers on match day. Bit of a jog, one maybe two subs smashing shots over the bar for 15 minutes, then kick off. I don't want that for Heys.

I'm really enjoying the time with all the lads. Tuesday Thursday Saturday, it's a great break from work, the Mrs and two kids through the week (no offence Hinchy's) but I'm really enjoying the effort our keepers put in, if they didn't it would make it very hard to commit that time despite my renewed passion for the club.

We've three keepers for our two teams at the moment, training 2 hours Tuesday's and 2 hours Thursday's. I'll do all I can to be at the 1st team game on a Saturday (sometimes family responsibility takes priority) to make sure our keeper is as prepared for the game as Joffy, Hutchy, Jay & Marcus do for all the outfield players.

I speak with Joffy, Hutch and Matt about the keepers performances of a weekend and with them also. I like to plan our midweek sessions properly so that Rob Sadler, Jack O’Brien and Kallum Campbell Rose are getting the most from their time.

We get stick for some of the drills off the lads, we work hard and have a laugh and we will often end our Thursday session involved with the outfield lads. I think there's a good balance in what we do and I hope the lads are improving each week

There's a distinct level of professionalism at the club and I know that that will only spread and grow across more aspects of the club.

The ambition Prestwich Heys has is great, the lads get it, some more than others as they've been part of clubs where success & professionalism is natural. It's great to be part of it all and I hope I can help be part of bringing that success to the club. Successes and dreams that many past and present have worked very hard to enjoy.
