Club officials at Cammell Laird, Prescot Cables and Rossendale United have been made aware of a scam designed to con budding young players into paying for non-existent trials at UniBond League clubs.
Emails, thought to have originated abroad, are being sent to footballers asking for money up front and paid into a Western Union account in return for setting up the trial. On the face of it, the emails may seem genuine as they name the club Chairman, information probably obtained from the club’s website.
Cammell Laird have even had a letter from the father of a youngster who has paid the introduction fee and innocently wrote to the club asking when his son should attend the trial.
Rossendale United’s Planning and Strategy Director, David Hancock, said:
“This is a worrying development. Obviously, it’s something completely out of our control and there is nothing we can do for anyone who has fallen foul of the scam once the money has been paid. Nevertheless, it still reflects badly on honest clubs like Rossendale United.
"All we are left with realistically is to publicise the issue as widely as we can and hope people will think twice and maybe ring the clubs concerned first to verify any approach received by email"
